In line with world trends, in order to identify and effectively manage the potential environmental impact of Tata International's operations, the company established and has maintained a strong environmental management system over many years. It is a vital element in the company's efforts to achieve results consistent with environmental leadership.
The company's leather tannery at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh is the first in Asia to be ISO 14000 certified. Tata International has set, monitored and reviewed objectives and targets related to environment management. The company is committed to controlling pollution and complies with relevant environmental legislations and regulations.
The company's environmental performances indicate a genuine concern towards the environment and commitment towards conserving energy and natural resources.
And as a part of this ongoing endeavour Tata International has taken the following steps:
Renewable energy from non-conventional source: From Leather waste
At the Dewas tannery a process was developed in our in-house R&D for using chromed leather shaving dust for Biomethanation to generate fuel gas and save energy - by substituting coal. This Biomethanation process has been patented with the Government of India.
The process has been implemented in bulk in association with Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources, Government of India, New Delhi under United Nations Development Program / Green Environment Forum programme of CHG emission reduction. The implementation and efficiency performance is being monitored by Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai, a premier leather research institute, under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.
The plant in its stabilization period has saved approx. 33 tons of coal in the factory canteen during 2002-03 starting from August 2002.
Renewable energy: Solar energy harvesting
The Company has installed a very large solar array for heating 50 m3 boiler feed water / day to 800C which gives 10% saving of coal/ year i.e., 560 tons/yr. approx. i.e., 9368800 Mega joules.
Recycling water
The company has made several worth mentioning efforts for recycling and reuse of water like ground water recharging, rain water harvesting. Regarding the affecting of water sources the Environmental Impact Assessment study by CLRI, a Government of India leather research centre states, "It can be stated that the impact of ground water quality due to leather complex on the surrounding environment is almost nil".
Recycling Effluent
To save soil pollution by improving Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) performance - on-line pH meter, COD analyzer etc. have been installed. The effluent coming out of our leather processing activities is first treated in our world class ETP to meet the regulatory norms. The same is then fed to a Reverse Osmosis system to go beyond norms to produce almost drinking water quality permeate which is used for our horticultural and process needs regularly.
Recycling other Waste
The leather tannery at Dewas generates various types of wastes, hazardous and non-hazardous, which are recycled and used.

Reducing emissions
The unit has taken a pro-active step of reducing suspended particulate matter (SPM) emission by installing a Cyclone Separator at the base of boiler chimney thereby reducing SPM emission.
The average stack emission quality for 2001-02 and 2002-03 is given below:

Reafforestation
The company has undertaken many programmes for protecting and restoring native eco systems through greening of nearby hillock and free distribution of saplings every year to the employees and community around the factory. Within the factory 40% of the land has been reafforested with the planting of 200,000 trees.
Ecolabelling
With regards to TIL finished leather qualifies to be marked with ECOLABEL as per BIS No. IS 14898:2001 of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Govt. of India, New Delhi.
Packaging
The company insists on eco-friendly materials (like biodegradable packaging material) from our suppliers. In pursuit of excellence, the company has always adopted the practices that support conservation, sustenance and rejuvenation of energy, environment and natural resources.
